Haiti has two official languages: French, the language in which most formal education is still taught today, and Creole, the language the vast majority of Haitians speak in their daily lives. But when Sandrine Exil moved from Colombia to Haiti, her father’s home country, he imposed a strict rule: no speaking Creole. Years later, after leaving the country because of a political crisis, that prohibition became central to Sandrine’s life and marked the beginning of a journey back to her roots.
