New York, April 2026 — Central, the series channel from Radio Ambulante Studios, premieres Las Reinas de Queens today — a ten-episode series about the lives and struggles of Latina trans women in Queens, New York. The series is available on all podcast platforms and at centralpodcast.audio.
Las Reinas de Queens tells the story of a community that built a family amidst precarity, migration, and exclusion. For years, this community was anchored by Lorena Borjas — a protector, advocate, and mother figure to many of its members. But when Borjas died, the community was left without her, and the threats from neighbors, clients, and politicians became more unsettling than ever. Faced with that loss, they had to ask themselves: What do we do without her?
This production is the result of more than three years of reporting, dozens of interviews, and close access to the community. From the streets of Queens to the bars and beauty pageants of the legendary Roosevelt Avenue, the series portrays a network of chosen families formed by women — many of them sex workers, artists, and performers, the majority undocumented — who look out for one another in the face of persecution, violence, and exclusion. More than a survival story, Las Reinas de Queens is about collective care, the pursuit of dignity, and the rise of new leadership.
The series was produced by Diego Senior and Pablo Argüelles, with additional production and reporting by Nikol Pizarro, Joana Toro, and Andrés Sanín. Presentation and editorial consulting were provided by Rula Ávila Muñoz.
