The Language I Didn’t Inherit
Nicole Chi Amén was never able to have a conversation with her grandmother, even though she visited her every weekend. They watched television together, shared meals, loved one another, but they were separated by a language barrier— Nicole’s grandmother never learned Spanish, and Nicole was never taught Cantonese. Years later, Nicole would set out on a journey in pursuit of a conversation she’d never been able to have: Grandma, what was your home like?
