Alias el Cóndor

Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro. September 3th, 1989. The Chilean soccer team was playing a crucial match against Brazil to earn a spot in the Italia ‘90 World Cup. They needed a win, and Roberto Rojas, alias el Cóndor —captain of the national team, goalkeeper and Chilean idol— was willing to do whatever it took to get it.

This story was produced in collaboration with 30 for 30, an ESPN podcast. If you haven’t listened to it, it’s really worth it. They have a new season that just came out about the yoga cult in the US and it’s incredible. Special thanks to Jody Avirgan and Adam Neuhaus. Keep an eye out for a version of the story about el Cóndor in English. When it comes out, we’ll let you know.

You can read a Spanish transcript of the episode.

Or you can also read an English translation.
