One canal, two countries.

The Panama Canal Zone came into official existence in 1912 upon completion of the Panama Canal. The United States was granted sovereignty over a 1,432 km² tract of Panamanian land, on which it attempted to create a utopian society. What was ideal for some was anything but for a large part of the country where it was installed.
